The Office of National Security (ONS) is a complex strategic organization which must operate across multiple disciplines and functions in order to deliver its mission and create an Enabling Environment for Sustainable National Development, Poverty Reduction and Conflict Prevention.

The organizational structure expects directors to be masters of their own specific areas.  Ultimate success within every area will, however, only be possible when directorates engage closely with other MDAs, the international community, NGOs and specifically the other ONS directorates.  This will produce the coordination and understanding required to ensure that the GoSL is able to counter the multiple risks and threats it faces and move from these to longer term national success.

At the centre of all ONS operations will be the demanding work of the data management team.  ONS must be confident in the services and assessments it provides across Sierra Leone and that must be underpinned by objective mastery of information which builds understanding of the complex situations we face.  All directorates must support and be supported by the data management team.

In turn, the changing world imposes rapidly developing new threats and risks and ONS must now look beyond standard security organizations. This includes engaging in active communications, recognizing its power and investing in mitigating actions to limit the need for actual response operations.

Finally, despite the changing nature of threats, the ONS must carefully marshal its resources and expertise.  Directors supervised by the COS/Deputy NSCoord must ruthlessly prioritise activities using the National Threat Assessment (NTA), National Intelligence Requirements (NIRs) and specific strategic direction as the guidance for this.  Time must be utilized to the full, much will be expected from our talented personnel, and directors must provide the clear capable leadership needed.
